Artist Outlook

Patrick Gassaway

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello, my name is Patrick Gassaway. I’m a freelance artist who enjoys developing creative solutions for my clients. I like to tell a story whenever I draw because it makes the creative process far more engaging. I am always looking to learn and expand my knowledge, as well!

What’s your favorite artwork / who inspired you to create your art?

I’m a fan of the fantasy genre and draw inspiration from the many subcategories in fantasy. It’s such an interesting and diverse area to draw thoughts and ideas from.

What influenced you to become an artist?

As a kid, I always enjoyed drawing, and I enjoyed watching my brother draw. As a student, I found that it was the only thing I really enjoyed doing, but didn’t think I could actually become an artist. I believe it was my strong desire to pursue art as a profession that led me to choose it.

Has your style changed over time?

I don’t think so. I’ve become more efficient over time, which is impacting how my drawings look.

What is your creative process while working on an art piece?

It can vary, but generally, I like to take short periods creating ideas with limited information to see what I can come up with on my own. Following this, I use more accurate information and references to hone the idea.

When working on a project like a comic book, how do you approach collaborating with your writer?

Clear communication;

Getting a clear understanding from the writer about the expectations for the project;

Also, being able to understand the intention of the writer and the story that’s being told.

What was it about the DC3 franchise that caught your attention?

The characters themselves, and the roles that they play in the franchise.

What would your dream project be?

I’m learning more about sequential art (storyboards, comic books, etc.,) currently, so maybe something in the realm of animation - that would be quite the experience.
